Social Interiors was formed in 1983 by Shane Foley and Rik Rue, and has recently included Julian Knowles as a permanent group member. The group has primarily worked with studio and recording projects, although they also perform occasionally in live contexts. Social Interiors reconstitutes sound from many regional and global contexts, including environmental noises, sound effects, instrumental packages and texts bartered from musicians. These are welded and mixed into abrupt sonic shapes for text pieces and performances. Rik Rue is well known as an analogue and digital tape manipulator, environmental sound recordist and radio producer, using tape recorders as an instrument to construct collision collages from mutant speech, looped phonemes, fractured melodies and residues of environmental resonance's.
